As one of the most iconic fashion houses in the world, Dior has always been synonymous with glamour and grandeur. Founder Christian Dior was also renowned for his innovative marketing tactics and shrewd aptitude for business. Dior’s extensive product range made the label a global household name. They were one of the first brands to embrace eyewear as a luxurious accessory, effectively making vintage Dior sunglasses some of the first styles of designer eyewear. Learn all about the history of Dior Eyewear below!

Christian Dior rose to fame for creating the ‘New Look’ in the fashion world. His eponymous label was founded in 1946, when fashion was stricken with post-war austerity. The French designer reintroduced the world to femininity and extravagance with his striking couture pieces. They featured rich fabrics, nipped waists, and full skirts that accentuated the natural curves of the female body. Dior was greatly inspired by the female form, and declared that his work was ‘dedicated to the beauty of the female body’.

Dior’s dresses were cut to follow every movement of the body, and he applied the same principle to his sunglasses and optical frames. His debut collection of eyewear was launched in 1966 after signing a game-changing licensing agreement with Wilhelm Anger of Carrera fame. Dior favoured round, oversized frames that complemented the contours of the face. The label’s original vintage frames were inspired by fine jewelry, and were often created with the same materials used in jewelry production.

Wilhelm Anger’s high tech contributions resulted in stunning frames that fused elegance with functionality. In addition to being the founder of Carrera Eyewear, Anger was the inventor of Optyl technology. The lightweight Optyl frames, originally created for athletic eyewear, made designer sunglasses suitable for everyday wear and allowed Dior to release a wider selection of eyewear.

Dior’s selection of eyewear quickly became a favourite amongst the fashion elite. Socialites and celebrities have been coveting the glamorous oversized frames since the 60s. Although Dior Eyewear is still going strong today, there’s nothing quite as special as a pair of genuine vintage Dior frames. Style icons like Rihanna, Rita Ora, and Elsa Hosk will agree.
